Updated December 28, 2011: There are two platforms available to import journal entries into QuickBooks Online. You can read more about each of these two platforms here.
Often time many third party vendors such as payroll companies and point of sales systems produce an IIF file that QuickBooks users can then import into their QuickBooks desktop company file. Unfortunately, Intuit has not provided any support for importing IIF files into QuickBooks Online.
Fortunately, for journal entry imports you could spend a few seconds modifying this file so that it is in a format that can be used with Transaction Pro Importer for QuickBooks Online. Essentially you need to remove lines that are not header or do not contain transaction information.
Over the past two days I have received this request from two clients who are using two different payroll companies and want the ability to import their payroll journal entries into QuickBooks Online. Below are the steps that you need to do pre-import.
- Open up the IIF file with excel
- Delete rows 2 and 3 and the very last row that will have the words ENDTRNS in column A
- After making these changes then save the file as an excel file
The original IIF file as opened in Excel is below. We will need to delete rows 2, 3 and 12 (these rows are highlighted in yellow)
Below is the import file after removing the additional rows of data. Save this file as an excel file pre-import.
Depending on the transaction type you may be able to follow this same methodology to import IIF files. If you would like to test this out you can find out more and download a free demo here or sign up for a free trial on the Intuit App Center.
